Jefferson County church shooting leaves teen badly hurt
Detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office have placed a manhunt for the clearly armed clearly dangerous gunman who fired shots at a teen in a church gymnasium Friday night.
Officers responded at about 8:30 p.m. to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Altadena Road near Vestavia Hills on shots fired report. Investigators determined that a group of teens was playing basketball when the unknown shooter entered the gym and played a few games with them, and then brandished a weapon and started shooting.
According to Deputy Chief David Agee, ‘This was the first time they’ve seen him at this location,’ it didn’t appear anyone knew the suspect. An 18-year-old victim was struck multiple times and rushed to UAB Hospital in a critical, but stable, condition, he is expected to survive. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

- 6-feet – 7-inches tallÂ
- very skinny.
