Jefferson County church shooting leaves teen badly hurt

Detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office have placed a manhunt for the clearly armed clearly dangerous gunman who fired shots at a teen in a church gymnasium Friday night.

Officers responded at about 8:30 p.m. to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Altadena Road near Vestavia Hills on shots fired report.  Investigators determined that a group of teens was playing basketball when the unknown shooter entered the gym and played a few games with them, and then brandished a weapon and started shooting.

According to Deputy Chief David Agee, ‘This was the first time they’ve seen him at this location,’ it didn’t appear anyone knew the suspect. An 18-year-old victim was struck multiple times and rushed to UAB Hospital in a critical, but stable, condition, he is expected to survive. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

The suspect was described as a

  • Black male
  • light complexion, about
  • 6-feet – 7-inches tall 
  • very skinny.
  • believed to be in his mid-20s, 

Investigators disclosed they are following up on leads provided by the other teens who were in the gym during the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
