Knoxville has lost a legend, but above all, we have lost a remarkable human being. Bill Regas has not only been a pillar of our community for more than 92 years, but he has been central to the lives of so many people throughout his vibrant, accomplished, extraordinary and God-fearing life and career. As for me, “Mr. Bill,” or “Poppy” as he’s called by family and evidenced by his license plates signifying the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren he currently has (the latest of which is Poppy23), has been an adoring father figure, as I’ve watched him love and live life with my amazing mom for the last 14 years. The memories are countless. Birthdays, holidays, concerts, dinner with friends, family get-togethers – he was always game, always there with bells on and ALWAYS brought his contagious smile and laughter to the party. Those who knew him never left his presence without genuinely being told how proud he was of them. He maintained the unique ability to instantly light up a room – radiating a warm welcome, exuding kindness and forever making you feel like the most important person in the place. He never missed the chance to show his support and was perhaps one of the most generous people I knew with his time, treasure and love. I have never known a sweeter spirit who exemplified such true authenticity. Mr. Bill/Poppy, how truly beloved you are and how very proud we are of YOU – of how you lived this life, of how you loved everyone so fiercely and completely, of how you taught the meaning of gratitude and graciousness, of how you made life count with every opportunity and experience. You served our country, you served our community, you served your family as a sterling role model and patriarch. May we all strive to live by your example through the incredible number of takeaways you so thoughtfully left us. Most importantly, thank you for cherishing and sharing so much of your life with my mom. You were a jewel who treated her royally and, as her children, we are grateful to and for you. What a gift you have been to all of us, and I imagine to each and every person who had the wonderful honor and privilege of crossing your path. I will miss you beyond measure my fellow Capricorn who always had the cool factor sharing Elvis’ birthday. We know you are now whole and will continue to shine down on all of us with that magnificent smile and those brilliant baby blues. Our hearts are broken and your heart and soul will be forever missed, but you have earned your wings, dear man, and are now flying high in God’s glory! “He who has gone, so we but cherish his memory, abides with us, more potent, nay, more present than the living man.” — Antoine de Saint-Exupery
