Authorities say an officer fatally shot a charging dog after it attacked a group of persons on Thanksgiving day.

Officers with the Savannah Police Department responded to the scene at about 11:30 a.m. on the 300 block of Wilshire Boulevard. Arriving officers located the owner of the dog and another unidentified individual suffering from serious injuries sustained from the dog. Investigators say the dog turned to the officers aggressively prompting one of the officials to fire their weapon.

Investigators say the officer fired his weapon to avoid further bodily harm to other people. The animal was fatally hit by the gunfire, and the injured victims were transported to the hospital, where they were treated for their injuries.

Officials did not immediately disclose what breed the dog was.
