Very sad news on the Deliveroo driver who was knocked down on North Wall quay on Monday night. For those who can attend the vigil, it would be a nice gesture to his family and indeed to the wider Brazilian Community in Ireland, many of whom, like Thiago, risk life and limb in all weathers delivering food for meagre returns. This poignant poem was shared today.. RIP Thiago Osorio Cortes

“I’m a delivery driver hereby writing to apologies, but first off I’m going to explain myself. No need to identity myself as I’m here to represent many others.
I’m the guy who delivers your food, that you know, but what you don’t know I’m gonna tell you. I wake up early, I pray, kiss my wife and sun then I go to work.
Raining, Sunshine, hot or cold, your food I’m going to deliver…
In traffic jam. I might be late, but your food I’ll deliver.
Many obstacles on my way, I’m having trouble to find you, but your food I’ll deliver…
When is too cold I don’t feel my fingers, it hurts, but anyway your food I’ll deliver…
Gardai could stop me then gimme a fine. But your food I’ll deliver…
Today I apologies. I couldn’t get to your house… I’ve got hit by a car, for no reason, like that, didn’t have time to think or stop… It took my life and your food I couldn’t deliver. Apologies”
In memoriam of Thiago Osorio Cortes 🖤 and many others not seen out there.
Go in peace.”

It is with great sadness that we learned that Thiago Cortes, who was struck by a hit-and-run driver while cycling along North Wall Quay on Monday night, has died as a result of his injuries.
Our thoughts are with his family & friends, his fellow delivery cyclists, and the wider Brazilian community in Dublin.
A vigil in Thiago’s memory is being organised for 5pm this evening at the Spire on O’Connell Street.
The organisers of the vigil, ELSU Ireland, have asked for attendees to do the following:
“Please bring candles and signs to the Spire in O’Connell Street for 5pm Wednesday the 2nd of September, wear a mask, observe social distancing, wear black, or your Deliveroo uniform.”

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
