On 28 August 2020 we were reached by the sad news that Professor Assar Lindbeck has passed away.
Assar was a giant of economics, the outstanding Swedish economist of his generation, a sharp and influential public voice, a mentor and inspiration for generations of economists, and to many of us a friend.
Assar was a member of the Institute for International Economic Studies since 1971, having been its director for decades. The IIES and many of us individually owe Assar enormously, for his vision, mentorship, guidance and leadership over the past 50 years.
We will greatly miss his brilliant mind, his witty humor, his knowledge, his curiosity, and endearing love for economics and reasoned debate.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
