Scott Hammer Death Columbia, NY – Passed Away: COLUMBIA, NY., – Dr Scott Hammer, a former IAS Governing Council member and Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, has died. Dr Hammer was a well-known HIV researcher and physician who held the Harold C. Neu Professorship of Infectious Diseases (In Medicine). Dr Hammr earned a BA in 1968 from Columbia College and an MD in 1972 from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He played a vital role in the evolution of the current HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy) paradigm, which has saved millions of lives.
Dr Hammer was the Director of The Columbia-Rockefeller Center for AIDS Research. His primary research interests include the development of improved therapies for people living with HIV, as well as an HIV vaccine to prevent HIV infection. He directs clinical research projects in these areas at Columbia University Medical Center and works closely with colleagues in New York City and around the world.
