Cotton’s musical career has been as a songwriter, lead guitarist, and lead singer for the band Poco. I joined Poco in 1970, replacing Jim Messina.
His best known song with Poco is “Heart of the Night”, which was a hit off the album Legend, released in 1978.
Damn. Paul Cotton, long-time member of the legendary band @PocoRocks has passed away. This comes just four months after the unexpected death of Cotton’s bandmate, Rusty Young. What a loss. Cotton penned “Heart of the Night.”

Sad news today about the passing of Paul Cotton, lead guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter of the legendary country rock band Poco. He took an existing wonderful band and moved it more in his own direction, yet retaining the genuineness of the band’s music and its legacy. R.I.P. pic.twitter.com/vAQDcRU7LN

Woke up this morning to very sad news. Paul Cotton was a special musical kindred brother. Spent time together before he joined Poco & indeed gave me a great honor when he filled my position. I last heard his voice on the evening of Rusty Young‘s Radio Memorial. Rest In Peace 🙏 pic.twitter.com/TYZjRA8Ave
